Scenic Train Rides on the Hawk Mountain Line

Departure Information

2009 Schedule

Trains depart promptly from the Kempton Station on the hour at 1, 2, 3, & 4 PM on each operating day. (See Special Events information for the Murder Mystery Train, the Harvest Moon Special, the Halloween Special, and the Santa Special Departures). Tickets may be purchased at the Kempton station up to 10 minutes before train time. No reservations are required except for the Special trains listed above. Steam and diesel locomotives are used on the 40-minute trips. The WK&S is open on these days:

June:   Only One Saturday, June 20th : Diesel (Kempton Fair, Wanamaker  equipment show) (Equipment Show postponed due to forecast for heavy rain.  Probable new date on Sept. 26th, 2009.  Watch web site for details.)

SPECIAL EVENTS:

April 4th & 5th: Easter Bunny Express
Ride our normal 40-minute ride with an Easter theme!  Our friendly rabbit will be at the Kempton station to pass out treats to all children before and after each trip. Reservations not required, normal departures at 1,2,3,& 4 PM each day.  Tickets:  Adults: $9.00, Children 3-11:  $5.00 

June 20th: Wanamaker Equipment Show (Postponed due to rainy weather, possible date Sept. 26th, 2009.)
Join us on Saturday, June 20th for a train ride to Wanamaker. Weather permitting, there will be many pieces of pre-1950 power equipment to view. Rider's wishing to stay in Wanamaker for the hour may catch the next train back to Kempton. Displays will include farm tractors, highway vehicles, gas engines, and various antique equipment, all restored and made operational by local residents. This is truly a unique collection of authentic tools used in the Berks and Lehigh county farm country.Other attractions in Wanamaker include the restored railroad depot, the Wanamaker general store, and the historic buildings of the village. Passengers may also request to be dropped off at the town of Trexler to visit the Albany Township Historical Society, and again catch a return train to Kempton in one hour. Patrons are advised to ride the train to Wanamaker as there is no public parking available in Wanamaker.Regular Fare, Regular Schedule.  (Transportation will be provided if guests detrain at Wanamaker on the 4:00 PM train.)

Aug. 1st & 29th, Sept. 26th:Murder Mystery Train
Join us for an evening of mystery during the Murder Mystery train ride. You will travel back in time to 1928 as Lucky Malone and Moonface Martin ride the rails with the wackiest group of gangsters you will ever meet.  but all is not well when some unfortunate sap meets their untimely demise in thie comedy murder myster "who-dun-it!" Train departs at 6:30PM on approximate two-hour event. Limited food items available at the snack bar 5:30-6:30PM at your own cost, but only bottled beverages are allowed on train.  Tickets: $15 Each, reservations are required. E-mail us for reservations or call 610-756-6469 for additional details.
 

July 25th & 26th:
Kids Fun Weekend
Once each year, the WK&S hosts its' "Kids Fun Weekend" with some "extras" besides the normal train excursions. We offer FREE motorcar rides, FREE ice cream for all train riders, a "Recycled Railroad" display, and pony rides (available at an extra fee). The Schuylkill & Lehigh  Model Railroad club will be open in the former Atlantic City Railway coach located behind the station.  (Train rides are at the regular fares & schedule; 1,2,3,& 4 PM each day, using the steam locomotive.) 

October 2nd & 3rd: Harvest Moon Special

Enjoy an autumn moonlight train ride with musical entertainment and light refreshments.The steam locomotive pulls the train on this 45-minute ride, which includes a stop to gaze at the full moon. After returning to the station, please stay and enjoy the musical entertainment of the "Dixieland Five" while enjoying cider, coffee, and cookies. Adult Fares: $9, Children's Fare ( Ages 3-11): $5. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED.  Order forms will be mailed out approximately 6 weeks prior to the trip to our mailing list customers, or you may print one from a link to be provided at that time. One trip each night, departs promptly at 7:30 PM. 


October 24th & 31st: Haunted Train
Enjoy an evening train ride with a more frightening theme.  Departures at 7:00 and 8:00 PM, using the diesel locomotive.  Details to follow.

October 31st& Nov. 1st: Halloween Ride
One child (ages 3-11) in full costume rides FREE when accompanied by a paying adult. Seasonal decorations. (Regular fare, regular daylight schedule, 1,2,3, & 4 PM, no reservations required.)


December 5th &6th: Santa Claus Special 
Join Frosty the Snowman, Santa & his Elves at the WK&S! Free gifts for the children as Santa walks through the train. Adults $10, Children (ages 3-11)$6, Children ages 2 and under: $1. RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.  There are 5 trips each day; departure times are:

  Saturday, December 5th: 11 AM, 12 Noon, 1 PM, 2 PM, & 3 PM

  Sunday,   December 6th: 11 AM, 12 Noon, 1 PM, 2 PM, & 3 PM 

 The Santa specials are run on this one weekend only. Order forms will be mailed in October to riders who are on our mailing list from previous years. You may print an order form at home with a link to be provided in October. If you used a printed order form, your tickets will be mailed to your house. On the day of your trip, you may board the train starting anytime up to 15 minutes before your departure.  The train, gift shop, and rest rooms are all heated in the event of cold weather. Be sure to bring your camera for family photos! In addition, the model train display, run by the Schuylkill & Lehigh Model Railroad club, will be open in the yellow coach behind the Ticket Office. Please note that discount coupons, group rates, and car charters are not available during the Santa trips.
